Twitch Chat Commands

Twitch chat commands start with a forward slash and are typed straight into the chat box. Anyone can use /w, /block or /color, moderators get tools like /timeout, /ban and /warn, and only the broadcaster can use /mod and /vip. Click any example below to copy it.

How Twitch chat commands work

Type the command into the chat box and press Enter. In the tables below, words in capitals are values you fill in, for example a username or a number of seconds. Typing just / in chat brings up a list of commands you can use in that channel.

Who can use what depends on your role: everyone, moderators (and the broadcaster), channel editors, or the broadcaster only. Commands you aren’t allowed to use are hidden from you.

Removed and changed commands

  • /host and /unhost were removed on October 3, 2022. Twitch points you to raids instead, and the old auto host feature is now called Suggested Channels.
  • Third-party IRC clients and bots lost slash commands in February 2023. They still work in Twitch’s own chat on the website and apps, but tools that connect over IRC now have to use the Twitch API.
  • /untimeout isn’t in Twitch’s current command list. Use /unban USERNAME or /timeout USERNAME 1 to end a timeout.
  • /delete isn’t in the current list either. To remove a single message, use the moderation options on the message itself.
  • /me MESSAGE (shows your message in italics) no longer appears in the help article. When Twitch moved the other commands off IRC in 2023, it said /me would keep working there.

Want your chat on stream? Our free Twitch chat overlay removes messages as soon as your mods delete them or time someone out. See how to add Twitch chat to OBS.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my command disappear when I press Enter?

Twitch hides commands you don’t have permission to use. If you type a mod command like /shoutout in a channel where you aren’t a moderator, it simply vanishes. A misspelled command shows Unrecognized Command instead.

What is the difference between /commands and !commands?

Slash commands are built into Twitch. Commands that start with ! come from chat bots such as Nightbot or StreamElements, so Twitch Support can’t help with them. See our Nightbot commands and StreamElements commands guides.

How do I undo a timeout on Twitch?

Type /unban USERNAME, which ends bans and timeouts early. You can also overwrite the timeout with a 1-second one: /timeout USERNAME 1.

Can I still host another channel on Twitch?

No. Twitch removed /host and /unhost on October 3, 2022. Use /raid CHANNEL at the end of your stream, or add channels to Suggested Channels so they show on your offline page.

Do Twitch chat commands work on mobile?

Yes. Twitch says chat commands keep working in Twitch’s own chat on twitch.tv and in the mobile apps. They no longer work when sent through third-party IRC connections, which have to use the Twitch API instead.
