How to use the Mic Muted Alert for OBS
- In OBS, open Tools → WebSocket Server Settings, tick Enable WebSocket server, then click Show Connect Info and copy the password.
- Paste the password below and click Test connection. If your browser asks to let the site access other apps on your device, click Allow. Pick your mic if you have more than one.
- Choose a style, then click Copy and add the URL to OBS as a Browser source, about 700 × 150. If it can’t connect, use Download local file instead.
- Put the source on top of your scenes (or in a nested scene you add everywhere). It stays invisible until you mute.
Why a mic muted alert helps
- Viewers see it too, so instead of chat spamming “MIC!!” they know you muted on purpose, and you notice the warning on your OBS preview.
- It pairs well with a Stream Deck. Make matching mic on/off keys with our Stream Deck icon maker.
- Going AFK? Switch to a BRB screen instead of just muting.
- Fix the sound itself with our guides to OBS mic settings and noise suppression.
Frequently asked questions
How do I show when my mic is muted on stream?
Turn on the WebSocket server in OBS (Tools → WebSocket Server Settings), set up the alert on this page and add its URL as a browser source. When you mute your mic in OBS, or with a Stream Deck or hotkey that mutes it in OBS, the warning appears; unmute and it disappears.
Is it safe to put my WebSocket password in the URL?
The password goes after a # in the URL, and browsers never send that part to a website, so it stays between the browser source and OBS on your computer. With the local file, it’s saved inside the file on your computer. Either way, don’t show the URL or the file on stream. You can also untick Enable Authentication in OBS if nothing else on your network can reach your PC.
Why does it say it can’t reach OBS?
Check that Enable WebSocket server is ticked in OBS and the port is 4455. Newer versions of Chrome and Edge also ask before a website may connect to apps on your computer: click Allow when Test connection asks. If the browser source in OBS still can’t connect, click Download local file and use it as a local file, which isn’t blocked.
Does it work when I mute with my headset or Discord?
It sees mutes made in OBS: the mixer’s mute button, OBS hotkeys and Stream Deck or Touch Portal mute actions for OBS. A hardware mute button on a headset or mixer, or muting yourself in Discord, doesn’t change anything in OBS, so it can’t see those.
Can it show “MIC ON” too?
Yes. Tick Also show when the mic is on to show a green badge while you’re live and a red one while you’re muted.
I cough a lot. Can it ignore short mutes?
Set Only show after to a few seconds. Quick mutes won’t trigger the warning, but forgetting to unmute will.
My OBS runs on another PC. Does that work?
Yes. Put the streaming PC’s local IP address in OBS address, and make sure the firewall lets port 4455 through.
