Frequently asked questions

What are Twitch’s animated emote rules?

Animated emotes are GIFs up to 1 MB, with at most 60 frames. Twitch also limits flashing. See our guide to making Twitch emotes.

My GIF has more than 60 frames. What happens?

The resizer keeps an even selection of frames and adds the dropped frames’ time to the ones it keeps, so the animation plays at the same speed.

Why does my GIF look grainy?

GIFs can only use 256 colours per frame. Simple artwork with flat colours looks best. Try 256 colours first, and only lower it to get under the size limit.

Can I animate a still emote?

Yes, use the animated emote maker to add shake, spin, bounce and other effects.
